Our five acres of sunflowers and millet grass are looking great!
As part of our regenerative farming model, we are experimenting with different forage crops for our cattle herd and to improve our soil health. This field will be rotationally grazed in the fall once the flowers come out which will provide big nutritional benefits for the cows. Sunflowers have deep roots which help break up soil layers, increase soil water retention and contributes different kinds of beneficial soil microbes. As an added bonus, the flowers will attract more pollinators to the farm and provide the birds with something to eat in the fall.
Can’t wait to see what this field will look like in the fall!
