In the fall we quite often will give the cows apples or various squash. It seems to be a special treat for some or receives a “yuck” reaction from others.
We noticed some squash plants growing a few months back in the middle of the field. Thankfully the cows have left them alone so it’s been fun checking every so often and seeing them grow.
We were so excited when we determined they were pumpkins!! We plan to carve the pumpkins for Halloween next month and then give them to the cows again afterwards. Perfect nutrient cycling. The boys have been calling them “poop pumpkins” and think it’s great fun!! 🎃
Apparently pumpkin patches make great spots for a calf to nap on a hot summer afternoon. I found a little cutie about a month ago fast asleep under the shade of the leaves. Sorry to wake you little one!!
Hope everyone had a great first week back to school! Our farm store is open this afternoon until 5pm and tomorrow from 9 to 2pm. Pickup an assortment of grass-fed and finished beef, pasture-raised chicken, raw wildflower honey or come for a walk to see some “poop pumpkins”, lol.
