What is rotational grazing?

What a gorgeous day!! Although it would have been nice to enjoy a kid-free leisurely morning (kids slept at their grandparents house last night), there was just too much to do this morning!!

First there was feeding/watering the one week old chicks in the barn. Next it was time to move the seven week old chickens in the chicken tractor onto new grass and feed them. Thankfully we filled their water tank last night at 9:30pm, so one less thing to do this morning.

Next time for the cows. We setup a new grass paddock for the main herd in the back pasture. You can see from the picture todays grass vs. yesterdays grass (some spots the grass is taller than me!). The cows are very good at munching their new grass paddock all while fertilizing the area. We have learned over the past few years of rotationally grazing our pastures it’s much better to let the cows tramp some of the grass than to let them munch all the grass down to the bare ground. This ensures the ground is covered and protected over the heat in July and the grass will grow back with some rain so we can graze it again in September. Main herd released to the new grass paddock and happy.

Next time for the newest mamas, their calfies and Bruce the bull. We setup a new grass paddock for them just behind and to the side of our house. They also needed some salt and mineral this morning. We moved them from the barn and front field (which needs a rest) into their new grass paddock. Everyone happy and ready to enjoy this beautiful day🌻😊

Always happy to chat and explain how we do things here on our farm. Any farm questions are always encouraged! Feel free to stop by our Farm Store (open today until 2pm) and see how it’s done firsthand.
