Square bale challenges

If you’ve talked to any farmer recently chances are they have been busy haying (cutting, baling, hauling or wrapping….or all of the above). You need the hay to be dry before it gets baled so the weather lately has been ideal. We do mostly big round bales of hay you pickup with a tractor but every year we bring out the ol’square baler for a few wagon loads. It’s tough work! Ask anyone that has ever been on the back of a hay wagon (it’s hard to get volunteers). Each square bale weighs about 60 pounds and it only gets more challenging building the load as you go. Fred and Ian picked a flat piece of land for this wagon load of squares (which can be hard to find with all the hills in Mono).

The boys and I sat on a square bale at the front of the wagon for a few rounds and just tried to stay out of the way. Farm kid training 101🚜
